Jeju for Families

Travelling with Kids

Jeju Island is known for its dramatic landscapes – from turquoise-lined beaches to lush waterfalls and ancient volcanic cones – but for families, the real charm hides in the quieter spaces in between.

Jeju for families offers gentle walking trails perfect for little legs, calm swimming coves and quirky museums. It’s an island where every day can be as relaxed or active as you choose.

Whether it’s discovering a gorgeous village café after a coastal stroll, wandering through fields, or watching haenyeo divers return with the day’s catch, these simple moments become amazing family holiday memories.

Nature & Trails

If you’re an active family and your kids love enjoying spending time outdoors and a good hike, then Jeju offers heaps of activities to keep you and your kids busy!

Jeju’s natural landscapes are among its most iconic features. You can walk up dormant volcanoes, numerous forest trails, and coastal scenery safely with short walks and moderate hikes suitable for all ages.

Jeju for Families – Our Favourite Nature Spots

  • Oreums (Volcanic Cones) – Jeju has hundreds of small volcanic cones scattered across the island. Many, like Sanbangsan Oreum or Darangswi Oreum, have short walking trails (30–60 minutes) and offer some amazing views of the entire island. These are great for kids to explore without undertaking long treks. And because they’re up and down, they’re easy logistically as you can park or get a bus/taxi to the one destination.
  • Hallasan National Park – While summiting Hallasan can be a bit challenging for younger kids, the Eoseungsaengak Trail and Yeongsil Trail offer family-friendly sections with lush forest, shaded paths, and wildlife sightings.
  • Olle Trails – Select segments of Jeju’s Olle walking paths are perfect for day trips or gentle strolls with kids, such as Route 7 (Seogwipo to Jeongbang) or Route 1-1 on Udo Island. Many families living on Jeju have completed some of the shorter Olle trails with their kids (including us – our kids have done many ranging from 4km to 15km).
  • Rainforest & Arboretum Trails – Locations like Bijarim Forest feature flat, shaded walks through dense nutmeg trees, which are great for younger kids – especially if you’ve got a stroller.

Top Tips for Families:

  • Wear good walking shoes – although many of the walking trails on Jeju are well cared for and marked, you will still experience walking on volcanic rocks and uneven paths are common
  • Bring water, snacks, and sun protection, especially for sunny coastal trails
  • Early morning or late afternoon walks are your best option to help avoid crowds and heat if you’re travelling in hotter months

Kid-Friendly Beaches

If you’re a beach loving family, then Jeju is the place to be! Expect safe swimming with bays that offer minimal waves, clean sand that’s perfect for building and castles and plenty of beaches to spend a relaxed seaside day.

Jeju’s beaches aren’t just scenic but they’re also family-oriented, with shallow waters, soft sand, and nearby facilities like toilets and shops to grab a much needed ice cream in the summer heat!

Some of our favourite beaches on the island to spend time with our kids include:

  • Hamdeok Beach – Calm, shallow waters ideal for younger kids. There are plenty of cafes and picnic areas nearby along with decent parking options.
  • Hyeopjae Beach – White sands and clear waters – you’ll see plenty of local and mainland Koreans here for photo shoots. Great for paddling with small kids but arrive early as carparks can fill up early if you’re driving. If you get here before 10am you’ll have it to yourself most days, especially during the week and in the slower seasons.
  • Samyang Black Sand Beach – Unique black volcanic sand, which offers a unique educational opportunity for kids to learn about Jeju’s volcanic landscape. Typically less busy than the white sand beaches so it’s a good option if you’re looking for a quieter day by the beach.

Top Tips for Families:

  • Bring sun protection and water shoes – some areas have volcanic rocks which can be hard on little feet but are great fun if you’re ready to spot crabs and other saline
  • Visit early morning or late afternoon for quieter beaches and softer sunlight

Parks, Playgrounds & Outdoor Fun

If you’re travelling with toddler, or younger school aged kids, having some good outdoor parks and playgrounds on hand can be an essential for making your slower travel days fun!

While not as many options as you may find on other destinations, Jeju does offer some lovely parks and open spaces that provide safe, interactive environments for kids to play while you can relax or explore.

  • Jeju Stone Park – Combines nature trails with educational exhibits about Jeju’s geology and folklore.
  • Eco Land Theme Park – A train ride through themed garden can be a lot of fun, especially for younger kids.
  • Jeju Maze Land & Camellia Hill – Outdoor puzzle and flower garden perfect for family photos and exploring. Remember to grab a map and try not to get lost!
  • Hallim Park – Walking paths, botanical gardens, and lava tube caves offer a great mix of education and leisure. You can easily spend half a day exploring in here.

Top Tips for Families:

  • Pack snacks and water, many parks can have limited food options especially if your kids are picky eaters.
  • Check seasonal flower or festival calendars – timing your trip with these can add to the fun! But expect it to be busy.

Indoor Activities for Kids

If you’re coming during cooler months, or are unlucky to experience bad weather on your trip there are lots of indoor activities to keep your kids entertained on Jeju.

Here are some of our favourites that we keep coming back to:

  • Aqua Planet Jeju (Seongsan) – Large aquarium with interactive exhibits, touch pools, and marine shows.
  • Jeju Teddy Bear Museum (Seogwipo) – Cute, immersive exhibits with teddy-making workshops.
  • Jeju Trick Eye Museum – Fun, hands-on experiences with optical illusions and augmented reality that your kids will love.
  • Arte Museum – Interactive art and light exhibits that’s perfect for all ages. Your kids (and you) will be mesmerized!
  • Indoor Play Centres – There are lots of locations in Jeju City and Seogwipo for toddlers and young kids to safely burn energy. One of our favourites was the Tayo Kids Cafe in Jeju City. But there are plenty of others to choose from, including Vaunce Super Park, which is great for school-aged kids.

Top Tips for Families:

  • Check opening hours – some sites have websites but many operate on Instagram or NAVER
  • Many museums offer combined tickets or discounts for families – ask on arrival

Family-Friendly Dining & Cafés

If you’re looking for family friendly dining, thankfully there are quite a few options on Jeju that cater for families. They offer kid friendly menus, high chairs and casual atmospheres.

Here are a few we’ve tried and tested:

  • The Canvas – located in a brick building between the GEC and Mosuelpo, this friendly restaurant is only open weekdays and has some delicious meals. You can also take away pre made dips, cakes and salads.
  • Smokehouse – this is a great option for dinner and serves burgers, tasty mac and cheese (your kids will love the smoky cheesy flavour) and craft beers.
  • Seagulls Farm – the owners of this Italian place are some of the friendliest we’ve met and the pizza is the best on the island!
  • Mippuen Confectionary – one of the pretties bakeries on the island with LOTS of outside areas for your kids to explore in a traditional Korean setting. The big swings and throwing games are a hit with our kids.

Tips:

  • Weekends are busy at popular cafés – consider visiting during the week if possible particularly at seaside locations
  • Check opening times directly with restaurants and cafes – many don’t open until 11am and some have sporadic hours
  • Many bakeries offer heaps of delicious sweet pastries, but not many savoury options. You may want to consider going mid-morning or early afternoon instead of lunch or dinner

Family-Friendly Accommodation

Although some larger families may have limited options, there are lots of family friendly accommodation types on Jeju. Booking.com and AirBNB tend to the best options for families.

If you’re on a budget, consider getting a traditional family room with roll-out bedding – these are affordable and give you lots of space during the day when you roll up the floor mats. And kids love it!

  • Villas & Pensions – Private kitchens, multiple bedrooms, and outdoor spaces for kids.
  • Hotels with Pools & Play Areas – Resorts in Seogwipo and Jungmun often include family-friendly amenities.
  • Location Tips: Staying in Jeju City is convenient for airport access and urban attractions but there are definitely other areas that offer more for families. Consider Seogwipo or southern regions which are closer to nature and waterfalls, and offer more things to do.

Top Tips for Families:

  • Confirm occupancy limits, cribs, and extra beds in advance
  • Split your stay across the north and south of the island for a balanced mix of convenience and scenery

Jeju for Families: Planning Tips

  • Transport: Renting a car is highly recommended. It will give you greater flexibility and it’s easier to transport luggage. Plus you’ll be able to visit more remote attractions that are challenging via bus routes.
  • Timing: Early starts help avoid crowds at popular sites, especially Sunrise Peak, and museums.
  • Weather Prep: Pack layers for coastal wind, sun protection, and rain gear.

Jeju Island is incredibly family-friendly. It combines nature, culture, and fun in a way that appeals to the whole family. From volcanic cones and Olle trails to beaches, parks, and hands-on indoor activities, you’ll experience the island safely, comfortably, and memorably.

With the right itinerary, Jeju offers something for every age and every type of family traveller.
